Aimee Stephens died last Wednesday at the age of 59. While her death was attributed to kidney disease, it is far more likely that she was pushed into death by the stress of living her life as a transgender woman.
When Aimee decided to declare that she was transgender to her employer, Michigan’s Harris Funeral Homes in 2013, the company she had worked for for six years fired her. Stephens sued for sex discrimination in the workplace, a case that has made it all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States. Aimee did not live long enough to hear the Court’s decision on that case.
Lambda Legal’s CEO Kevin Jennings remembers Aimee Stephens’ life in this touching video.
