Putin says “never” to same-sex marriage

By Richard Hack

In a meeting in Moscow on February 13, Russian president Vladimir Putin made it clear same-sex marriage has no future in his country.

Speaking to a “working group” of Putin selectees who he had asked to review his ongoing campaign to alter the Russian constitution, when the subject of marriage was introduced as “being between one man and one woman,” Putin stated that it was unnecessary.

“As long as I remain the president, there will be no Parent No. 1 and Parent No. 2 here,” he said. “There will be a mom and a dad.”

While continuing a official policy of legalizing homosexuality in the country, Putin has privately denounced the LGBTQ community, and personally pushed through a law that made circulating gay propaganda a crime carrying a mandatory prison sentence.
