Jerry Herman, the Broadway composer who wrote ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and ‘La Cage aux Folles,’ is dead at 88

Jerry Herman, the Tony Award-winning composer for Broadway hits like Hello, Dolly!La Cage aux Folles, and Mame, died Thursday, The Associated Press reports. He was 88. Herman had been living with his partner, Terry Marler, in Miami at the time of his death.W

While his major Broadway hits included Hello, Dolly!, Mame, Dear World, and Mack & Mabel, it was his iconic La Cage aux Folle that left its indelible imprint with the LGBTQ community.  The song which ended the first act of the musical was titled “I Am What I Am,” and became the anthem of the gay community.
